Start with the management foundation
Look for a coherent foundation across accounting, economics, finance, marketing, operations, organisational behaviour and quantitative reasoning. IIM Ahmedabad’s public curriculum provides one example of these disciplines appearing within a general management programme. It is a reference for understanding breadth, not a requirement that every MBA copy its structure.
Ask how the modules connect. A pricing decision, for example, can involve customer research, cost analysis and operational capacity. Courses that encourage connections between functions may help you reason through business problems more effectively than isolated lists of definitions.
Inspect electives for depth and availability
An elective title is only the beginning. Ask for its learning outcomes, topics, prerequisites and assessment. Find out how often it runs and whether there is a minimum cohort size. Check whether elective choices are restricted by timetable or specialization rules.
If you are interested in analytics, do not count every module containing the word data as equivalent. One may teach interpretation, another software use and another statistical modelling. Compare each module with your existing skills and the requirements of roles you want to investigate.
Treat assessment as evidence of learning
Request sample assignments or a description of how performance is assessed. Useful questions include whether learners analyse cases, write recommendations, build models, work on projects or sit supervised examinations. Different assessment formats develop and test different capabilities.
Ask how much work is individual and how group contributions are assessed. Group work can develop collaboration, but you also need opportunities to demonstrate personal competence. Clarify the feedback process: who reviews the work, how detailed the comments are and whether learners can improve after receiving them.
Look at the capstone or major project
A good project comparison asks what problem the learner tackles, which evidence is available and what standard the final output must meet. Find out whether supervision is structured and whether the project can connect to your employer or career interest.
Do not assume that an industry-branded project means guaranteed access to a company or its confidential data. Ask what participation actually involves. For a portfolio, a carefully labelled simulation may be more useful than a prestigious project name with little opportunity to explain your own contribution.
Check currency without chasing buzzwords
A current curriculum should help learners assess changing business practices, including digital tools, with judgement. Ask how examples and reading materials are refreshed and how new tools fit into established concepts. A course can mention AI frequently while offering little practice in evaluating outputs or applying them responsibly.
Examine whether learners discuss evidence quality, privacy, decision accountability and the limits of automation. These questions are useful across specializations. Your aim is to understand how the programme teaches adaptation, not simply how many fashionable topics appear in a brochure.
Create a personal gap map
Write down three capabilities you want to develop and attach a specific module or project to each. For example, better commercial analysis may require accounting foundations and a business case; stronger people leadership may require feedback practice and a team project.
Mark any gap that the MBA does not clearly address. You may need a separate internship, technical course or workplace assignment. Before enrolling, confirm prerequisites, expected study hours and support. A course is a stronger investment in your development when you can explain how its actual work connects to your goals.
Frequently asked questions
How many electives should a good MBA have?
The number alone is not a reliable comparison. Assess depth, availability, relevance, prerequisites and the work students complete.
Is a capstone always an industry project?
No. It may be a research project, business plan, simulation or organisational assignment. Ask for the exact format and supervision arrangements.
What should I request before enrolling?
Ask for the detailed syllabus, timetable, assessment structure, elective rules, sample work and feedback process for the specific programme.
